Guest Post: Spreading Happiness with The Happsters

22 Jun

Hi All! I have a visitor on the blog today. Her name is Kelli from The Happsters. She was one of the first blogger friends that I met. She is in the San Diego area too, so we have been able to get together and build a friendship through our common interests. So happy to have met her, and I love the movement she is starting through her blog. I asked her to stop by and share a little bit about The Happsters. Take it away Kelli…

I started the Happsters in January when I saw that the Today Show had featured a suicide prevention organization called “Happier Boston”. They showed volunteers going to a train station in Boston, holding up happy signs for travelers walking by, and handing out oranges to anyone who wanted them. I absolutely loved the idea and it occurred to me that if people went out of their way to spread happiness, the world would be a happier place. I’ve always been interested in happiness and realized that there wasn’t a movement out there that was created to make the world a better place through random acts of happiness. So I decided to create the Happsters!

We make other people happy and let others know when they make us happy.  One of the ways we  spread happiness is by giving happy notes to express our gratitude to people we encounter (our mailmen, waitresses, family members, friends, etc.). You can become an official Happster & get free Happy Notes here. We also blog about everything related to happiness. Check it out here.

We now have over 320 official Happsters in 20 countries, and our goal is to have 10,000 Happsters spreading happiness in their communities by 2014 (ambitious, I know!).

Have you spread happiness lately to friends, family members, or even strangers? Let me know in the comments!

The Reason Behind My Blog

18 May

While I was sitting in one of the white wooden chairs in the audience at Elevate Blog Conference a week ago, I listened attentively to all of the beautiful speakers. They all had a different, personal story to tell, but like the quote that Ashley told us, “That which is most personal is most universal.”, I realized that there was an underlying similarity within all of their unique stories. The similarity was that we all have a story to share. We all want our voice to be heard. Ashley urged us to think about why we want to share our story. Why do we blog about our lives when we could keep it all private? Why do we put ourselves out there in a world that can be cruel and hateful at times? These questions have been rolling around in my brain for a week now. I have thought about the answers countless times, but have been procrastinating when it has come to writing about them. Why? I guess I’ve been scared to get too real. I’ve been scared to be vulnerable and open up too much. But, in that fear I have discovered my reason why.

As far back as I can remember I have been shy, reserved, and fearful of other people. I have had problems making friends, getting close to others and interacting socially. The social anxiety that I have felt at times has been almost debilitating. Big crowds make me cringe. The fear of rejection has dug its talons in deep within me, and it’s been a long, intense battle to break free. This blog is a place to help me break free. After twenty-eight years of living with anxiety and fear, I am ready to break free. I am ready to love myself for who I am and not let the fear of what other people may think take control of me. It has been a work in progress over the years to become free of this heavy weight. Blogging gives me an outlet to be me, let go of my fears, and share my story with others.

I blog because I want to

be real,

be inspiring,

be raw,

and be ME.

Just Be.

I want to share my story with whoever wants to listen. I want to provide an open place where myself and others can feel safe to just be. I want to inspire you to love yourself, be kind to yourself and others, be happy, and be you. This is why I blog. Thank you, Ashley for asking that question and making me think about the reason behind my blog.

Easter Decor

17 Mar

Easter is right around the corner, so I thought I would share my Easter decor with you. I decorated our mantle with fun spring-time and Easter decorations. One of the decorations is an easy Easter egg garland that I made. Here’s how I made it…

Supplies:

  • 3 pieces of scrapbook paper of your choosing
  • oval stencil
  • pen
  • scissors
  • hole punch
  • yarn
  • Scotch tape

supplies2 supplies3 supplies

Directions:

  1. Choose your three pieces of scrap book paper and trace three ovals on to the back of the paper.
  2. Cut out each of the ovals with your scissors.
  3. Using your hole punch, punch a hole about an inch from the top of each oval.
  4. String each oval along a piece of yarn measuring as long as you want. Mine was about ten feet.
  5. Space each of the ovals out evenly across the string of yarn and use a small piece of Scotch tape to adhere the back of each oval to the yarn.
  6. Hang your Easter egg garland and enjoy!

DIY Easter Garland

This is what my finished garland looks like on our mantle.

And, here are some more pictures…

basket

I got these little baskets from Target and put some Easter grass in them.

bird

I’ve had this little birdie for a while. He’s been on my craft desk, but I thought he would fit in nicely on the mantle for now. I bought him from Michael’s.

chick eggs

I got these little egg chicks from the dollar spot at Target. Love!

easter decor

I bought the plastic eggs from Michael’s and put some washi tape (also from Michael’s) on a few of them to add a little cuteness. I had the vase already.

Hope you enjoyed seeing my decor as much as I enjoyed creating and sharing it. Please share in the comment section below if you used this tutorial or have other ideas to share. I’d love to see them!

Who’s up for a challenge?

12 Feb

I recently found this neat app called Challenge Loop. It is an app that lets you browse through and join all types of challenges. You “compete” and share your status with others who have signed up for the same challenge. Some challenges even offer prizes at the end of the designated time frame. There are weekly and monthly challenges or others that are self-paced such as “The 100 Push-Up Challenge”. The types of challenges include nutrition, fitness, health and wellness, and others. This app can be a useful tool to getting started with anything you’ve been striving for. It can help with your diet, weight loss, fitness or anything you want. You can even set-up your own challenge.

I am currently doing two monthly challenges for February. One is the “Butts and Guts Fitness Challenge” (BGFC) and the other one is the “28-Day Blog Challenge” (28DBC). The BGFC focuses on working your glutes and abs by doing body weight squats and planks each day. Every day, the goal is to do more squats and hold your plank for longer than the previous day. Unfortunately, I’m on a couple day break due to my cold. Booo! But, my goal is to do 100 squats and a 1 min 30 sec plank by February 28th.

The other challenge has been helpful in getting my blog up and running. Its focus is to help you build a better blog by challenging you to fix, add, update or share something each day. Both of these challenges have helped me be accountable and focus on the objectives that are important to me. I challenge you to challenge yourself! You may be surprised at what you can achieve when you set your mind to it and get involved with a community of others striving for the same goal. What do you want to challenge yourself to achieve?

Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all. ~ Helen Keller
