Nyx Makeup Review from Sarah at The Four on Board

27 May

Hi all!! My name is Sarah and I am from The Four on BoardHere is a recent picture of my husband and I this past month when I received my Masters degree.

And here is a recent picture of my family.

If you venture on over to my blog you won’t find much….YET! I just started to blog, well I take that back, I started a new blog. I had done the family blog thing from 2007-2012 and I was getting kind of bored with it and felt like the only readers I had were my mom and mother-in-law. So, with the help of my attendance at Elevate in 2012, and this past year in 2013 (where I met Natalee) I decided to change my direction. I am hoping for one similar to Natalee’s, where I can talk about family, recipes (they will never be original), crafts (solely Pinterest inspired), mom stuff, and maybe throw in some projects from my classroom. I am a kindergarten teacher and my hubby stays home with my two kids, ages 3 and 5. It has been so much fun to have the reverse of what a lot of people think is “normal”. In fact, when I found out Natalee had the same situation I was floored, and so happy! If anything, we can both relate with having a house that isn’t perfect but our kids are having the times of their lives! Dads bring such a HUGE amount of excitement into the family!

Anyhow, enough about me, today I am so lucky to get to guest post for Natalee while she is out having a blast with the fam, and I decided to clue you all in on a hidden treasure I have found recently. (hidden to me that is!)

Have any of you out there tried Nyx Cosmetics???? Seriously affordable, amazing, make-up. I have to be honest and tell you I am not really a make-up girl, so I don’t like to invest in the expensive kind. I am all for the girls that do, and MY are they beautiful! But, honestly, my kinders could really care less if I have make up on or not, and so could I! Working for 5 year olds does have its perks.

One time while heading into Ulta to get my ever so trusted Bare Minerals powder (which I still use), I walked past two girls and overheard them gushing about Nyx make up. I waited for them to leave the aisle, and found myself on my hands and knees looking at all the products and taking quite a handful up to the counter. Ulta also happened to be having a 40% sale on Nyx cosmetics and because it was so inexpensive, I decided to try it out.

I HAVEN’T GONE BACK SINCE!

Here are some of my favorites…

Their eye shadow primer  I previously used Clinique’s touch base but this does the same job and is way cheaper.

Roll on shimmer There is such a wide variety of colors! This stuff can be used on eyes, face, or body. My favorite color is nude because it blends well with any shadows.
And here are a few items that I want to try. I will probably wait until it goes on a rockin’ sale again.

Butter gloss I am enticed by the fact that they say it isn’t sticky, and the reviews are awesome!

Shine Killer Just the name entices me! For the price, it is totally worth trying!

So next time you run out of mascara, eye liner, shadow, etc. swing by Ulta and try one of their products!

Thanks for having me Natalee!

P.S. I always see people with disclaimers saying they were compensated for their posts, and I just want to say that I ONLY WISH Ulta or Nyx would compensate me!!! hehe. Maybe this is my chance?!?!

Clean Eating: My Story-Part 3

22 Apr

Read part 1 and part 2 first.

The third part of my clean eating journey is what I call the “refinement phase”. This phase started when my son was about 2 months old. We discovered that he had blood in his stool. The doctor told us that this was most likely due to a dairy or soy sensitivity. Since I was breastfeeding, I cut these foods out of my diet immediately, and he soon recovered.

Since then, I have had small amounts of dairy on occasion, and it does not seem to bother him. I don’t eat soy often, so I doubt it was ever the problem. Recently, I tried to introduce a larger amount of dairy into my diet, and I was sooo sick. Dairy is one of the top ten inflammation-causing foods and some studies have suggested that nearly 75% of Americans have an intolerance to it. I never knew until I stopped eating it that I was part of this group. Are you?

Another food that I have recently discovered that I have an intolerance for is gluten. I got to spend my New Years Eve in the emergency room due to abdominal pain. NOT fun! I was there for 10 hours, had two CT scans, and a pelvic ultrasound. After all of these tests, the doctors were still unable to find out what was wrong. At least it wasn’t appendicitis, which is what they had to rule out. I was a bit upset that they could not find out why I was having the pain, and I decided to start looking into what could have been causing it. I came across a lot of information about gluten. I decided to exclude gluten from my diet for a couple of weeks just to see how I felt.

That was the BEST thing I have ever done for my body! Not only did my abdominal pain subside, but I had way more energy, I was not bloated, and I felt happier. It was scary to think that something I was ingesting for sustenance was potentially causing more harm than good.

Needless to say, I haven’t turned back to gluten, and I won’t be trying to add dairy back into my diet either. However, I can’t say that I am completely finished with the refining phase. I think that there are still things that I can clean up in my diet to perfect it. I will continue to experiment and research what the best options are for me and my body. I want to be the healthiest, happiest me I can be. And, I urge you to do the same. Like I’ve said before, it is a long process, but I don’t doubt that it is the best thing that I can do for my body.

5 Tips for How to Eat a Clean Diet

27 Mar

This is the second post where I talk about clean eating and how to make it a lifestyle. Read my first post, “What is Clean Eating: 5 Guidelines to Follow”, here. I want to go into how to start changing your diet to incorporate more “clean” foods. Here are a few ways to get started…

  1. Read labels! This is very important to eating clean. Many foods contain unnecessary additives that can be harmful to your body. My rule of thumb is, if it contains something that I can’t pronounce, I shouldn’t be eating it.  I also try to stick to foods with 5 ingredients or less. Less is MORE when it comes to treating your body right.
  2. Eat at home. By doing this, you are able to have control of what you are putting into your body. Many restaurants use processed, frozen foods full of sodium and other unknown ingredients that your body does not need.
  3. Do all of your shopping on the outside perimeter of the grocery store. Rarely will you find anything clean in the middle aisles.
  4. Try to buy organic fruits and vegetables and grass-fed lean meats when possible. This is one that I struggle with. Sometimes it can be difficult to fork over the extra money (no pun intended) for these items, especially the meats. They can be expensive! But, your body will appreciate it in the long run. Our bodies were not designed to ingest the harmful additives, hormones, and pesticides that are found in most of the foods we eat today. It’s no wonder cancer and other diseases are on the rise.
  5. Prepare, prepare, prepare! If you have a plan of what you are going to eat each day, and you ensure to bring enough food with you wherever you go, you will not fail. I use to fall into the trap of not bringing enough snacks with me to work which led me to indulging in the crap (bagels, cookies, donuts, etc.) that my co-workers always bring in. Now, I always make sure to have healthy snacks on hand so I am not tempted by these things when I get hungry.

Clean eating has been a work in progress for me, but I have never felt better about my health than I do now. I am never bloated, I rarely get headaches, and I have more energy. I have also enjoyed trying new foods and recipes since eating clean. Some include: cornish game hen and kale (pictured above), grass-fed bison, spaghetti squash, cauliflower mash (tastes just like mashed potatoes, yum!), and different types of homemade hummus. I hope you will nourish your body and give clean eating a try.

Let me know if you have any clean eating recipes or tips to share. 🙂
