New Job, New Hair, New Clothes!

4 Aug

In honor of starting my new job, I got myself a new hair do. I chopped off about 6 inches and got some low lights. I also bought myself some new clothes. I am kind of excited to have an excuse to care about how I look. I was at my previous job for 6 years and ended up in a rut with caring about my looks. Everyone would show up in jeans and a t-shirt, and you were the weird one if you got dressed up at all. Honestly, I didn’t really mind it; I enjoy being comfortable, but it’s time for a change, and I’m fully embracing it. A new job, a new do, and a new wardrobe. I’m excited!

Here’s a before and after of my hair. If you follow me on Instagram, I’m sure you’ve already seen it, and if you don’t follow me there, then you should! 😉

I have been doing a little shopping throughout the last week or so to build up my wardrobe. Like I said, I am used to rolling out of bed and throwing on jeans and a t-shirt, so I had zero nice work clothes. I bought a pair of black, grey and khaki dress pants and a few new tops. I shopped at the Outlet Mall and found some good deals at Anne Taylor and Banana Republic. I found my dress pants at Costco of all places. You never know what you’ll find there! They are Calvin Klein too. Score! Here are some of the tops I found…

Blue Tee from Banana Republic. It’s so soft, and I love the color!

I also bought a black cardigan from Banana Republic to wear over the tanks.

I’m so happy to have some new outfits that I feel confident wearing. It’s been awhile since I’ve felt this good, and I’m getting really excited (and nervous) to start my new job on Tuesday. Wish me luck!

Where do you like to shop for dress clothes? How often do you treat yourself to new outfits? I think I need to do this more often!

It’s Monday…Hello.

29 Jul

Hello Monday,

This is the last Monday that I will go to the job that I’ve had for the past 6 years. This is the last Monday that I will sit at my microscope and check emails, the last Monday that I will chat with friends, enjoy lunch together and go on walks during our breaks. This is such a bittersweet time in my life to realize that today was the last full day at the company where I first started my career as a Cytogenetics Technologist. I have many fond memories of my journey there. I even met my husband there. I grew, I learned, and I experienced so much there. I will miss many things, mostly the people. I have worked with some amazing people in my career, and I will miss the strong working relationships we shared. I am hopeful that I will build new ones at my new job, I am hopeful for new beginnings, a new sense of motivation, and new friendships. I am excited for my new journey!

After work, I went to return some dress pants that I bought last week. I ended up finding some much more affordable ones at Costco of all places. So, I returned the others, but of course I ended up buying something else while I was there. I’ve been in a buying mood lately! I bought a starter kit of Bare Minerals make-up. I have always heard good things about it, and I like that there are only five ingredients used in it. I was hooked when they asked if they could put some on me. I don’t often wear make-up, but I think I should start since I am getting older, and my skin isn’t as young looking as it once was. Do you use Bare Minerals or have you heard anything about it? I am kind of having buyer’s remorse, and I can’t decide if I should keep it or not. Heehee.

After my shopping trip, I picked up some dinner and headed home to my boys. After an early dinner, I took Little Mr. to the park where he explored and explored. He loves walking around and picking things up off the ground. He loves to pick flowers and play in the dirt. It was a really nice evening. All in all, it wasn’t such a bad Monday.

little boy in a big world

Oh yeah, we also got a new dishwasher delivered (after suffering with our barely functioning one for a year!), and my hubby installed it. I’m so proud of him! He’s never been much of a “handy man”, but he’s been doing a lot of projects around the house lately. I’m excited to start making some home improvements now that he’s in the handy man mode! 😉

How was your Monday? Eventful or just another Monday? Hopefully, there was some excitement in it or something that made you smile. 🙂

Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream Review

9 Jul

I am loving my new Olay Fresh Effects BB cream. It’s perfect for summer because it is light and breathable. I don’t wear make-up often, but when I do, I want something that looks and feels natural. This stuff fits the bill. I am using the light-to-medium color option, and it evens out my skin tone nicely. There is also a fair-to-light option.

Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream

My favorite thing about this BB cream is the smell. I can’t stand the smell of sunscreen on my face, but this doesn’t smell like it at all. It smells clean and fresh. The only thing I don’t really like about it is that it makes my forehead kind of shiny. I have combination skin, so I think it may be giving me a little too much moisture in some of my already oily areas. It definitely delivers on the moisture though which is not a bad thing. I’d rather my skin be getting too much of it than not enough.

This product will run you anywhere from $11-$15. Walmart or Target sell it for the lower end price. Since I don’t wear make-up everyday, it’s kind of hard for me to judge whether the price is worth it or not. I’d guess that it would probably last a good month or so if you were to use it daily, so it’s probably a decent price point.

To sum it up, here are the pros and the cons:

Pros:

lightweight coverage
UV protection-SPF 15
moisturizes
smells great

Cons:

not great for oily skin

contains parabens

Have you tried this product? What do you think about it?

I was given this item by Influenster for review.

Nyx Makeup Review from Sarah at The Four on Board

27 May

Hi all!! My name is Sarah and I am from The Four on BoardHere is a recent picture of my husband and I this past month when I received my Masters degree.

And here is a recent picture of my family.

If you venture on over to my blog you won’t find much….YET! I just started to blog, well I take that back, I started a new blog. I had done the family blog thing from 2007-2012 and I was getting kind of bored with it and felt like the only readers I had were my mom and mother-in-law. So, with the help of my attendance at Elevate in 2012, and this past year in 2013 (where I met Natalee) I decided to change my direction. I am hoping for one similar to Natalee’s, where I can talk about family, recipes (they will never be original), crafts (solely Pinterest inspired), mom stuff, and maybe throw in some projects from my classroom. I am a kindergarten teacher and my hubby stays home with my two kids, ages 3 and 5. It has been so much fun to have the reverse of what a lot of people think is “normal”. In fact, when I found out Natalee had the same situation I was floored, and so happy! If anything, we can both relate with having a house that isn’t perfect but our kids are having the times of their lives! Dads bring such a HUGE amount of excitement into the family!

Anyhow, enough about me, today I am so lucky to get to guest post for Natalee while she is out having a blast with the fam, and I decided to clue you all in on a hidden treasure I have found recently. (hidden to me that is!)

Have any of you out there tried Nyx Cosmetics???? Seriously affordable, amazing, make-up. I have to be honest and tell you I am not really a make-up girl, so I don’t like to invest in the expensive kind. I am all for the girls that do, and MY are they beautiful! But, honestly, my kinders could really care less if I have make up on or not, and so could I! Working for 5 year olds does have its perks.

One time while heading into Ulta to get my ever so trusted Bare Minerals powder (which I still use), I walked past two girls and overheard them gushing about Nyx make up. I waited for them to leave the aisle, and found myself on my hands and knees looking at all the products and taking quite a handful up to the counter. Ulta also happened to be having a 40% sale on Nyx cosmetics and because it was so inexpensive, I decided to try it out.

I HAVEN’T GONE BACK SINCE!

Here are some of my favorites…

Their eye shadow primer  I previously used Clinique’s touch base but this does the same job and is way cheaper.

Roll on shimmer There is such a wide variety of colors! This stuff can be used on eyes, face, or body. My favorite color is nude because it blends well with any shadows.
And here are a few items that I want to try. I will probably wait until it goes on a rockin’ sale again.

Butter gloss I am enticed by the fact that they say it isn’t sticky, and the reviews are awesome!

Shine Killer Just the name entices me! For the price, it is totally worth trying!

So next time you run out of mascara, eye liner, shadow, etc. swing by Ulta and try one of their products!

Thanks for having me Natalee!

P.S. I always see people with disclaimers saying they were compensated for their posts, and I just want to say that I ONLY WISH Ulta or Nyx would compensate me!!! hehe. Maybe this is my chance?!?!

New Beauty Products

10 Mar

I bought a few new beauty products last night, and I am really loving them! I bought a new nail polish by Essie called “Ladylike”. It is a nice creamy neutral pink. It went on smooth and had great coverage with just two coats. I’m loving it for spring! I think it will be a great fall color as well.

Essie polish-ladylike

This was the first time I tried an Essie polish. I have to say that I’m really liking it, and it was well worth the money.

I also bought a new lip color. It intrigued me when I say it in the store because it looks like a big crayon. I wasn’t too sure about how it would feel on my lips; I thought it may be a bit dry, but decided it was worth a shot at $5.

Sally Hansen colorfast

It is Sally Hansen brand, and the color is called “Get Mauve’n”.

It is not dry at all like I was afraid of. It is very moisturizing and fun to put on. It is not sticky at all which I really don’t like. And, the color is a perfect neutral. I would definitely recommend this for an everyday lip color at a very decent price. I think I’ll be buying more colors soon!

Crazy for Coconuts!

3 Mar

If you haven’t heard, coconuts seem to be the newest health obsession, and for many reasons. This fruit and it’s products provide multiple health benefits. I have recently been turned on to coconut oil. Unfortunately, it is pretty pricey. The good thing is that it will last a pretty long time and has multiple uses which make it well worth the money. I have only tried it for a few things so far, but will definitely be experimenting with more of the claimed uses soon. (I have to test these types of things out first.) I have used it for a lip moisturizer, and it feels awesome and smells great too! I have also tried it as an eye make-up remover and a facial moisturizer. I would recommend only using it as a night-time moisturizer though, as it is pretty greasy. It soaks into the skin nicely though. I also want to try it on my cuticles and heels as well as for cooking (stay tuned…). This is the kind of coconut oil I have. I bought it from Sprouts. Be sure to purchase the virgin, non-refined coconut oil for maximum health benefits.

I also recently found a recipe on Pinterest for coconut water. Check it out here! 🙂

Have you experienced any of the awesome benefits of coconut oil? I’d love to hear about it. Comment below to share.
