Simple Stencil Wall Art Project

5 Aug

Yesterday I decided to use the Royal Design Studio stencil that I received from Elevate to make a simple wall art project for our home. I really want to use it as a pattern for one of the walls in our room, but for now I thought I’d try it on a canvas. Here is the stencil I used…

Ornamental Flower Stencil

I centered it on a blank 12×12 canvas that I purchased from Michael’s and taped down the sides with a couple pieces of clear office tape that I had lying around.

Once the stencil was taped down where I wanted it, I mixed my paints and started painting.

I took a couple of acrylic paints that I had on hand and mixed them to make the perfect shade of turquoise. I mixed a small amount of black paint into my Aqua Cool Pearl color.

Supplies for Simple Wall Art Project

Mixing Paint

After I mixed the perfect color, I started painting. Luckily, I mixed just the right amount to finish the project. If you decide to mix your own color, I recommend mixing more than you think you will need just in case you run out because it may be difficult to mix the same exact color if you end up needing to make more. {Just a helpful hint that I learned along the way ;)}

Simple Wall Art

I started at the top and worked my way down brushing in vertical strokes. I used quite a bit of paint in each section, and some paint ended up getting underneath my stencil. Fortunately, it turned out pretty cool looking. It looks kind of 3-dimensional. If you want your edges to look more crisp, I would recommend using less paint or even tracing the stencil with a pencil before painting it (if you have a steady hand). I also just learned that you can use a special stencil brush with short, firm bristles to help avoid getting the paint under the stencil. I will definitely go this route if I stencil our walls. I am pleased with the way mine turned out though. I decided to hang it in our hallway to add a pop of color.

Happy Happenings-Week 3

6 May

Every week, I like to do a little recap to sum up all of the reasons I have to be happy. When life is a whirl wind, much like mine is now, it is sometimes hard to slow down and enjoy the little things…the little things that make life worth living, the happy things.

If you’ve missed weeks 1 and/or 2, you can see them here:

Happy Happenings-Week 1

Happy Happenings-Week 2

Here are a few of the happy happenings going on in my life right now…

Giveaway Winnings

I won two awesome giveaways, and my winnings both arrived on the same day! I was stoked! I won a $100 giftcard from Sara at High Fashion 4 Less, and I won a $50 Lisa Leonard gift card from Alyson at Vintage Sunshine. I picked out the Lisa Leonard necklace pictured above. It is the “Jumble of Charms” necklace. I just love it!

Sushi!

On Friday night, I had dinner with a friend I hadn’t seen in months. We shared two sushi rolls that were custom made by the sushi chef, and they were absolutely amaaaaazing!

Queen Bee Market Loot

On Saturday, my friend Kelli from the Happsters and I went to the Queen Bee Market and found some super cute stuff. I finally got a Printed Palette shirt that I have been drooling over for quite a while. I got a handmade Mother’s day card (that I really need to get in the mail!), some cute straws for little Mr.’s birthday party, some cool clothespin magnets, some adorable bobby pins from Little Mamas, and some of the best smelling lotion EVER! The scent is called sweet kumquat, and it’s made by a mother and daughter company called Fresh Batch. All of their products are made from all natural ingredients, and they smell wonderful.

Mickey Mouse Bday

I am in full party-planning mode now since my son’s first birthday party is right around the corner. It is going to be a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse themed party. He just loves Mickey!

I also have some other fun and exciting things going on within the next month. It is super busy around here lately! I am in the process of switching over to a self-hosted site that I am designing. I recently found out that I get to go to a blogging conference called Elevate. I was on the waiting list, and a spot opened up. Woo hoo! So glad I am only about an hour away from where it’s being held. And, in June, I am giving a presentation at an annual genetics conference in Las Vegas for my job. GULP! I’m just freaking out a little bit! Anywho, enough about all the craziness going on here. What do you have to be happy about today or what’s something you are looking forward to in the near future? I’d love to hear about it! Just comment below to share.

Recent DIY House Project

3 Apr

I’ve been so busy with work, a teething baby (Argg!), and my Clean Eating Challenge that I almost forgot to share this post with you. I wanted to show off my hubby’s latest project that he completed from his “Honey Do List”. He did not enjoy it too much, but I’m very grateful that he did it for me. 🙂 I think he loves me!

A couple of weeks ago we were at Lowe’s and decided to pick up a new light fixture for our guest bathroom. We’d been wanting to replace it for quite some time (kind of like all the other projects around here), so we looked around and found one we both liked. The fixture and the three globes were pretty affordable, around $50.

The next day, the hubby and I (I’ll give him most of the credit though.) got to work. He took down the old fixture, and I got to painting. I painted three coats over the old paint that was behind the fixture. Luckily, we had some left over paint from when we moved in, so we didn’t have to hunt to match the color and buy another can of it. Winning! (Do people even say that anymore?! Man, I’m getting old!)

I actually enjoyed my part in the project. I like to paint! The hubby? Not so much. He’s not the biggest fan of home improvement projects; he did a great job though!

What do ya think? I love it! And, I think now it’s time for a new one in the master bathroom. I’m sure the hubby will beg to differ. 😉

Have you recently done anything to update your home? I love hearing about DIY projects, so feel free to leave a comment below and share.

Sick on a Saturday

10 Feb

Of course the sickness hits me just in time for the weekend. Yesterday, we had a date day planned and a birthday party to go to at night, but plans changed because I got sick. Oh well. :-/ It happens. I didn’t let my cold get me down too much. I was still pretty productive around the house. I made coconut water (recipe to follow in an upcoming post), macaroons, hummus, and I practiced my crochet. The macaroons didn’t quite turn out as expected. I may need to tweak the recipe I used. They didn’t stick together very well, but they still tasted good. That’s the most important part! But, I won’t be posting a picture because they were NOT pretty! The hummus I made was super easy and quite tasty. I used a can of garbanzo beans, olive oil, some cumin, salt, and pepper. I put it all in my food processor and wah-la!

I enjoyed it with some baby carrots and cherry tomatoes. Yum!

I also got to use my sick time to practice my crochet. About a week ago, I went to my local craft store and bought some yarn and a crochet hook, logged into YouTube, and started watching some “How to Crochet” videos. I was able to put what I’ve learned to use and get pretty decent at it. Hopefully, I will be able to make a cute scarf or hat soon!

For dinner, I wanted something warm to soothe my sore throat. I’d been craving Pho for a while, so I sent the hubby to get me some. It was just what I needed.

I wish I had some more! Ohhhh hubby???
